Alan Lamont has been at the very heart of tennis at Kippie Sports and Leisure Club since joining in 1985 as our resident Tennis Professional. Back then, the club had just two uncovered courts and only a small number of players. Through Alan’s passion, dedication, and coaching expertise, the sport flourished, and by the late 80s and 90s many talented players had emerged—several going on to compete in North East and Scottish Championships under his guidance.
Alan’s impact stretches far beyond performance. Over nearly four decades, he has coached hundreds of members of all ages and abilities, from young children picking up a racket for the first time to experienced senior players. His calm nature, understanding approach, and ability to tailor his coaching to every individual made him a hugely respected and valued figure within the club. For some families, three generations have benefited from his coaching—a true testament to his lasting influence.
During the winter months, when outdoor tennis was limited, Alan expanded his expertise into racketball and squash, continuing to support members year-round and further strengthening the club’s sporting offering.
Kippie has also been central to Alan’s personal life. In the late 80’s, he met his wife Eileen at the club, who was working as a waitress at the time. Together they have raised four fantastic children, all part of the wider Kippie family.
Throughout his career, Alan has enjoyed memorable moments, including playing alongside legendary actor Charlton Heston at the AECC where he was asked to coach Charlton, just one of many stories from a remarkable journey in sport. Both pictured here alongside then Kippie Chairman Tony Dawson.
Members consistently speak of Alan with great appreciation:
“Alan Lamont has been a stalwart of Kippie over the past 41 years. During his many years of service, he has provided tennis and squash coaching to thousands of members at all ages and stages, from young children through to senior men and women.
With an understanding temperament and pleasant manner, he has been able to provide the correct advice for all ranges, from beginner to very accomplished players, giving members the skills and opportunity to enjoy tennis throughout their lifetime. Some long-standing family members like me have had three generations benefit from his coaching.
Alan’s legacy has also been the huge improvement in the Kippie tennis facilities—from two old outdoor courts to our current superb all-weather indoor facility. Members and staff have enjoyed Alan’s coaching and company over the years, and his commitment to Kippie throughout his career has been exemplary. He leaves the club and tennis in good heart, and we all wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement.”
“Alan has coached my children since they joined Kippie Lodge over 10 years ago. He is incredibly patient, positive, responsive and one of the most hard working people I have met. He is a grand master at feeding tennis balls to the same place over and over again! My children have greatly enjoyed his company and have all become skilled, competitive and enthusiastic tennis players as a result of his manner and skilful mastery of coaching. Alan will be a major loss to Kippie Lodge, but deserves a well earned retirement with time to pursue other interests.”
As Alan now steps back from tennis to spend more time with his grandchildren and begin a new part-time chapter, we thank him for his incredible service, loyalty, and the lasting legacy he leaves at Kippie.
We have also received a number of enquiries from members asking if there will be an opportunity to contribute towards a leaving gift for Alan. In response, we have set up a GoFundMe page for anyone who wishes to contribute and help give Alan the send-off he truly deserves as he begins his retirement from coaching.
He will always be a cherished part of the club’s history.
